World Wellington Boot Throwing Contest
World Wellington Boot Throwing Contest 2010 is due to take place on 11th September 2010 in Wellington, Somerset.
REVIEW 2009 CONTEST
Over 500 people took advantage of the summer weather to head to Wellington in Somerset for the inaugural championships. The contest was a jointly organised between Wacky Nation and Wellington Chamber of Commerce. On the day Wacky Nation's Sally Raynes was the consummate compere/crowd entertainer (Edinburgh festival next!) with her amusing and very tongue in cheek commentary on proceedings. (Please get in touch should you want to hire Sally for your own event).
James Bamber (me!) started the day off with an impressive throw of 26.80m's (well, impressive for a skinny guy) and held the lead until midday when a bunch of friends turned up to show me and the rest of Wellington how to really wrang! Simon Biffen pulled out the best throw of the day, still some 30 metres short of the world record, and afterwards admitted that he is also a decent discus thrower. There is talk of forcing Simon to use his left hand should he enter next year. Sarah Edwards won the female event in a much closer fought contest, but she will also have to use her left hand if she returns. The event was also very popular with the children and toddlers and mention must go to Chloe in the Under 6 category with a stunning 12 metres, which was good enough to beat some of the men. Come on guys, you can't be beaten by a 5 year old girl!!!
There was additional action on the sidelines with a few wayward throws causing consternation for the picnicking families, who found themselves inadvertent targets for the wellies. The 2010 contest promies to become an even bigger event with early murmourings of a world record attempt!
